How long do dental crowns last?

How long do dental crowns last?

May 20, 2021

If there isn’t enough tooth structure to restore a tooth with a filling; or if you have had a root canal, your dentist will likely want to place a crown over the tooth.

A crown covers the damaged tooth and helps restore the normal shape, size, and function of the tooth. The question is, how long do dental crowns actually last?

A diamond is forever, but a well-taken-care-of crown has a lifespan of about 10 years. At Cherry Hill Dentistry, we offer guarantees on our crowns for up to 5 years.

What affects the lifespan of my crown?

The first (and most obvious) answer here is: your oral hygiene. Neglecting your oral care routine can quickly cause your crown to fall out before that 5 – 10 year lifespan. Keeping up with regular flossing and brushing will help ensure the crown is well taken care of and stays intact for closer to that 10 year period.

Another aspect that affects the lifespan of your crown are your habits. If you’re grinding or clenching your teeth, you could be causing issues with crowns. If this sounds like something you need help with, be sure to talk to Dr. Tanya or a dentist nearby  and they can make the proper recommendations.

You’ll also want to avoid eating ice and other hard food and candies with the crowned tooth.

Can my dental crown fail?

There are different instances that could cause crown failure. It will require a diagnosis from Dr. Tanya, so that’s why it’s important for you to come in for your check-ups. Sometimes decay under a crown can be seen on an x-ray, letting us solve the issue before it escalates.

If you think you’re experiencing crown failure or your crown is breaking/cracking, call us at (402) 488-2383 or fill out this form to schedule an appointment ASAP.
